Fabric Artisan Story – From Hong Kong to the UK

Double S is a handmade bag and fabric accessories brand originally founded in Hong Kong and now based in London, created by Shirley and Simon. While Double S represents our shared vision and journey, every item is personally designed and handmade by us, reflecting my lifelong passion for sewing and craftsmanship.

Originally from Hong Kong, Shirley is a fabric artisan with a deep and enduring love for handmade crafts. My journey with sewing began in childhood, when my mother first taught me how to sew. What started as a simple skill passed down from her gradually became a lifelong passion, and remains a meaningful connection to my roots and personal heritage.

My handmade journey developed further in 2017, when I began creating and selling handcrafted hair accessories at local craft markets in Hong Kong. Each piece was carefully made by hand, reflecting patience, dedication, and close attention to detail.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I used my sewing skills to produce reusable fabric face masks, offering them to the community at close to cost price. It was my small way of supporting others during a difficult and uncertain time, and it strengthened my belief in the value and meaning of handmade work.

Following the pandemic, my work naturally evolved into handmade bags and fabric accessories designed for everyday use. To further improve durability and finishing, I invested in an industrial sewing machine, allowing each piece to achieve a professional level of quality while preserving the character and authenticity of handmade craftsmanship.

Later in life, following significant social changes in Hong Kong, I made the life-changing decision to move to the United Kingdom in search of a freer and more peaceful way of life. Starting in a new country has been both challenging and deeply meaningful, and I feel grateful to be able to continue sharing my work through local craft markets across the UK.

My creations combine practicality, sustainability, and timeless handmade traditions. Through Double S, we hope to bring a touch of Hong Kong’s crafting heritage into everyday life in Britain.

For me, sewing is far more than a craft — it is a lifelong passion that has stayed with me through every stage of my life, and has given me strength, purpose, and a sense of continuity even through times of great change.

Every piece I create is made entirely by my own hands, slowly and carefully, with patience and deep personal care. From the moment I choose the fabric to the final stitch, I am fully present in the process. Each item carries not only my skills, but also my story, my journey, and my quiet dedication to this craft.

It is profoundly meaningful to me that something I have made can become part of another person’s everyday life. Through Double S, I hope to share not only my handmade creations, but also the warmth, sincerity, and human connection that true handmade work represents. I remain deeply committed to preserving the spirit, authenticity, and soul of genuine handmade craftsmanship in everything I create.
